Device Placement Considerations

Placement and material selection plays an important role, which otherwise could impact the communication of these devices, in turn affecting the performance of the final solution. Some of the points to be considered are:

  • The best communication is possible when the devices are in line of sight
  • The signal strength reduces as the distance between the devices increases
  • The antennas of the devices have to be placed away from metals such as aluminium, as this could have a negative effect on the communication distance
  • If metal structures have to be in close proximity ensure that at least the BLE antennas are in line of sight of nearby devices
  • The Lumos Controls devices have to kept far away from metals including aluminium and nonmagnetic metals as they affect the RF signal quality
  • Please ensure that at least the BLE antennas are kept out through a small hole, if the devices are placed in closed metal enclosure

BLE range between devices in an installation depends equally on-site conditions as they do on device hardware. So, we recommend that testing be carried out in every installation to optimize the positions of BLE devices, quantity of repeaters etc.
