When a user is out of BLE range, remote operations can be performed by him if the Lighting Ecosystem has an active gateway connected. A user can use this option to operate individual devices, groups, scenes, etc. While doing this he needs to ensure that his phone's Bluetooth is switched OFF.
When an operation is performed using the LUMOS Controls app and the phone's Bluetooth is OFF, the operation is sent to the Cloud via the phone's data connection. The cloud then sends it to the gateway, which operates the devices in the mesh accordingly.
